What a 10–35% bounce rate actually costs you
Published 18 September 2026 · TAPAC
Bounce rate gets treated as a deliverability metric. It is also a line item, and the arithmetic is unforgiving once you multiply it out.
The decay you start with
Two published numbers set the baseline:
- 23% of contacts change jobs every year — ZoomInfo, 2025.
- 40% of emails are dead within two years — NeverBounce.
Neither number is about your campaign. They are about the list. A contact record is a perishable good, and most purchased lists are sold at the moment their value is already falling.
The arithmetic
Take 1,000 contacts and a 20% bounce rate (inside the 10–35% range typical of static databases):
- 200 addresses bounce. Those bounces are charged to your sending domain, not to your vendor.
- Of the 800 that resolve, some are the wrong person: the research above says roughly a quarter of the file has moved on.
- Meanwhile a verified-at-request flow sits at 2–5% — on the same 1,000 contacts, 20–50 bounces instead of 200.
Fresh, verified data does not just reduce bounces; it is measurably better input: 42% better performance from fresh scraped data versus stale databases (Harvard Business Review, 2024) and 3.2× higher open rates for personalized outreach (HubSpot, 2025) — personalization only works if the person is still there.
Price per usable contact, not per record
Subscriptions bill per seat and per credit regardless of decay. TAPAC bills $0.10–0.50 per verified contact, 100 free searches, no subscription. The free lead cost & bounce-risk calculator takes your own list size, bounce rate and price and returns true cost per usable contact and the share of sends that are wasted — worth ten minutes before the next list purchase.
What to do this week
- Stop sending to anything unverified. SMTP-check the address, then send.
- Replace "buy a list" with "source at request time" wherever the source is public: company sites, Discord, Telegram.
- Instrument the domain: bounce rate, complaint rate, reply rate — not opens.
- If an agent does the work, give it the tool:
npx -y @tapacapi/mcp.
